A Different Approach to Family Photos

As a Montessori teacher I incorporate that deeply into my photography. I give children the lead when it comes to our sessions. I do this for two reasons. As we know, it can be hard to make children sit still and be happy in photos. By respecting and listening to what the child wants to do, we are compromising with them and showing them that their opinion matters and it also helps keep them regulated. I usually will give a two choice question, "would you like to sit or stand for this one?"  The second reason is that when you look back, the moments you take of your kids that bring you the most joy and happiness are where they are interacting with you and the world. I think those photos are much more special than posed photos. But that doesn't mean I don't like posed photos. They also have a place in my sessions and theres nothing wrong with a lovely picture of your family all smiling and looking at the camera! I always start the session with posed photos when children have the most tolerance to listen to directions. What sets me apart from other photographers is that I know child development and why children don’t like photos. I have changed the way I do things to make it a fun, non-stressful experience for everyone, even your littles.
